Chapter Twenty

Travis

I take the drive back slower, wanting to enjoy the ride and the feel of her behind me. After tonight, there’s no question in my mind about whether I will let her in my life. It’s not a question of if but rather when. I’ve never wanted anything more in my life, and I won’t lose her. With Addy, I begged her to stay for Max, but never once did I beg her to stay for me. I would get on my knees for Sophia and do anything to keep her in my life—I know that now.

I pull into a small Mexican restaurant on the beach and turn off the engine. Taking her hand, we head up the stairs and come face to face with Nathan. He’s leaving with a couple of guys and stops when he sees us. I feel Sophia grip my hand tighter, and I pull her closer to me.

“You guys go ahead. I’ll be right there,” Nathan says to his friends. Once they leave, he meets my eyes briefly before focusing on Sophia.

“I’m glad I ran into you. I’ve been wanting to apologize for the way I acted. I never meant to make you feel like I was stalking you.”

“But you were,” I say, shooting daggers at him.

He looks at me, clearly uncomfortable, before glancing back at her. “Look, I was an ass okay. I should have listened to you when you told me to stop calling you, and I should never have followed you places. I just became obsessed with you and thought I could get you to change your mind. I see how wrong and messed up that was now.”

“So you did follow me. I thought I was going crazy thinking you were stalking me, but I was right. All those times you showed up where I was…it wasn’t a coincidence like you led me to believe.” Anger shoots through me, and I force myself to stay quiet so Sophia can say her peace.

“Like I said, I know how messed up and wrong that was. I just wanted to let you know that I’m in a better place now and that I’m sorry if I made you feel scared in any way.”

“I appreciate you apologizing. I really hope the next time a girl says no, you listen to her and respect her boundaries.”

He nods his head briefly. “I better get back to my friends. You guys have a good night,” he glances at me before walking away.

“I still don’t like or trust him,” I say under my breath as I watch him get into the truck with his friends.

“Hopefully, he’s telling the truth and will do better next time, but I have no idea if he’s being sincere.”

We walk the rest of the way up the stairs and get seated at a table. Nathan left a bad taste in my mouth, and I try to let go of the anger I’m feeling.

Sophia studies me as she sips on her margarita. “Are you okay? You’re still not thinking about Nathan, are you? It sounds like he won’t be bothering me again.
